Description

NGC 5394/95 = Arp 84 is an interacting pair of galaxies in the constellation Canes Venatici. The pair of galaxies is about 160 million light-years from the Milky Way.

Halton Arp divided his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups based on purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of spiral galaxies with a large, high-surface-brightness companion on one arm (Arp catalog).

The two galaxies were discovered by William Herschel on May 16, 1787 and were later given the names NGC 5394 and NGC 5395 respectively in the New General Catalog.
